People say that Gangwon do is queen of beautiful Korea. There are many beautiful streams in the valleys where you  can meet a lot of cute Sancheoneo, in Massifs east province. And , in Massifs west province, you can meet Dong gang, Joyang gang, Seo gang, beautiful snake rivers who tell us many legends flowing through cliffy and forestal mountains near Youngwol, Jeongseon, Pyeongchang. All the rivers, there, you can catch any fish !   We introduce hereunder some excellent fishing places.

BukHanGang (River)

It is the spillway water flowing from Guman ri power station near Hwacheon dam which makes Paro ho. It keeps such regular flow of water even in draft season that fishing there is available almost four seasons. It has good reputation as spot of Sogari. Recently the population of Bass is increasing visibly. It takes aprox. 3 and half hours by car from Seoul.

 

PyeongHwaEui Dam (Peace Dam)

The dam is built at the upper stream of Paro ho(lake). It has many spots of Sogari and other various species near the outlet. it is easy to access to lake and to several important spots by car. This lake keeps minimum waterlevel for all seasons. For flyfishers, wading is not applicable in this spot. It takes aprox. 4 hours by car from Seoul.

 

SeoHwaCheon (Stream)  SeoHwaMyeon, InJeKun
 

Seohwa cheon is a quite big stream that flows through Seohwa myon, north of Inje. This stream is wide and keeps high water level for all seasons. Therefore, fishing even in draft season is available. Anglers meet almost all kinds of freshwater species in this stream, including Yeolmogueo, Song eo(trouts), and so on. There are many fishing spots for all kinds of fishing methods. Especially, spots for lure & fly fishing are widely spread along the stream. It takes aprox. 5 hours by car from Seoul.

 

SuipCheon (Stream)  BangSanMyeon, YangGuGun

This stream flows from North Korea, irrigating Paro ho (lake). Due to the military camps at upper stream, it is not easy to approach there but, you can fish near Bang san myon area where the stream runs through really beautiful valleys and feed many species fo lure & fly fishing and other methods. This stream runs the province between Pyeong haw eui dam and Seohwa cheon. It takes aprox. 4 and half hours by car from Seoul.

 

PaRoHo ( Lake )  

YongHoRi & TaeSanRi, BangSanMyeon, YangGuGun

 

This lake is a big impoundment made by Hwacheon dam. Later, Pyeong hwa eui dam was installed its upper stream. The big lake has a wide surface and many valleys where it nourishes a lot of species and fishers. It has been famous as one of the best fishing spots of Sogari and recently, the population of Bass is increasing visibly. One of Korean bass tournaments is regularly held on this lake. This lake irrigates Chuncheon ho. It takes aporx.3 and half hours from Seoul.

 

SoYangHo (Lake)    ChunCheon

 

Soyang ho is the largest lake(impoundement) in Korea, covers Chuncheon city, Yang gu gun and Inje gun. There are so many species and fish that it assembles almost all kinds of anglers. To approach to good fishing spots, you should usually use the boats. At the fishing places, you can cast on the rocky shore. Wading is available in some small streams among many ones irrigating this lake. This lake flows to the east of Chuncheon city. It takes aprox. 3 hours by car from Seoul.

 

ChunCheonHo (Lake)    GoaTanRi, ChunCheon

 

it is the big impoundment surrounding Chuncheon city. There are so many species and fish that almost all kinds of anglers repute it as one of the best fishing spots in Korea. As an example, Gotan ri and Inram ri are famous for many Pirami and Keuri. Lure fishing Keuri in Gotan ri is good for all seasons. For fly fishers, boating is usual. There are many lodges, restaurants, food supplies and useful facilities at each spot. About 3 hours' drive from Seoul.

 

 NaeRinCheon (Stream)   KiRinMyeon, InJeGun

 

Streams flow through high mountain area in East massifs. It is one of the good paces for rafting. It is an extremely clear water taking its rise from Odae san and runs through really beautiful valleys, where you can find many good places for camping. It irrigates east of Soyang ho. Good fishing spots  for lure and fly fishers are spread all over the valleys where this snake runs through. For an example, Hapgang area near Inje eup is famous for big Sogari. It takes aprox. 3 and half hours by car from Seoul .

 

BangTaeCheon (Stream)   KiRinMyeon, InJeGun
 
It is upper stream of Naerin cheon. They named the course between the place of origin to Hyeon ri as Bangtae cheon. Afterwards, it is Naerin cheon. It is an extremely clear stream that runs through deep valleys of dense forests. All the shore along the stream could be considered as good fishing spots for lure and fly anglers. There are a lot of species and fish. Fishing in the picturesque surroundings is really fantastic. You have Bangdong Spring in near area. It takes aprox. 4 hours by car from Seoul.

 

 

HongCheonGang (River)    HongCheonGun
 

This river provides many good places for camping as well as many species and fish. People enjoy almost all kinds of fishing in this river. In the summer, there are so many tents that it may bother quiet anglers. But the river is long and varied enough to find another spots, not disturbing mutually. You can find many good places for lure and fly casting along the river. It is relatively not remote river. About 2 and half hours' drive only form Seoul.

 

NaeChonCheon (Stream)  NaeChonMyeon, HongCheonGun


This stream runs through the remote villages located between Hongcheon gang and Naerin cheon. it is a small and clear stream providing village children good swimming pools. It is a kind of small snake river, making many pools, riffles, rapids where many species are schooling. You can enjoy quiet fishing for a day because this stream is still not crowded with anglers.. This stream may not suitable for lure fishing, except Keokji, but good enough for fly fishing. About 3 hours' drive from Seoul.

 

KeumKyeCheon (Stream)  HwengSeongGun
 

This stream is reputed as one of the best spots of Keokji lure fishing. It flows through Hongcheon gun, Hweng seong gun towards Wonju city and finally irrigates Namhan gang(river). The species are of quite big variety. The surroundings along the stream is a little bit plain but the road follows river for a long distance that it makes anglers to approach easily to fishing spots. All the bridges and underwater barriers are good fishing spots for lure and fly fishing.It takes aprox. 2 and half hours by car from Seoul.

 

SeomGang (River)   HwengSeongGun
 

This river runs through Hweng seong gun, Yeoju gun and finally irrigates Namhan gang. At the upper part of the river near Hweng seong, you have many good fishing spots for lure and fly fishing. The main species are Keokji, Keuri and Pirami. In the summer, there are many tents in this area because the surrounding along the river is extremly beautiful and it is relatively near from Seoul. Anglers who carry the fly rods of 2~3 weight would surely be satisfied with many fish and scenery. It takes aprox. 2 hours by car from Seoul.

 

JucheonGang (River)    JuCheonMyeon, YeongWolGun

This river runs through the east foot of Chi ak san(mountain) and irrigate finally Namhan gang after the junction with Pyeong chang gang. The middle and upper part of the river are surrounded by beautiful scenery and lower part has many good fishing spots. Due to the beautiful surrounding, this river is also covered by quite many tents in the summer. There are really many fishing spots suitable for lure and fly casting. The main species is Keokji, Sogari, Pirami, and sometimes trouts. It takes aprox. 2 and half hours by car from Seoul.

 

SeoMaNiGang (River)    SinRimMyeon, WonJuSi

This river is a part of Jucheon gang. People call Jucheon gang that flows through Seomani village, Song kye ri, Sin rim myeon as [Seomani gang]. The upper part of the river near Anheung ~ Gangrim is extremely beautiful and fishing is also very good there but the entrance is differ from that for the rest of the river. The road that goes along with most of the part of the river through the beautiful forests is also recommendable for driving. On the way of driving, you may stop on a shore and catch some Keokji, Pirami and Galkyeoni at several castings. About 2 and half hours' drive from Seoul.

PyeongChangGang (River)    YoungWolGun. PyungChangGun

This river becomes wider as real river from Jang pyeong crossroads on Yeong dong express way and flows to Pyeong chang as a quite wide river,  meets Jucheon gang and transfer its name as Seo gang and also meets afterwards Dong gang at Yeongwol. In this river, there are many species and fish, especially famous for Korean traditional fly fishing Pirami and Galkeyoni. This snake river provides many good camping places in each crook. Almost all the shore and banks are good spots for lure and fly fishing. I would call this river a real treasury of lure and fly fishing. It takes aprox. 3 hours by car from Seoul.

 

EoRaYeon (Valley)     KeoWunRi, BukMyeon, YeongWolGun

Eorayeon is a small island of sandy bank surrounded by a deep and clear pool made by Dong gang near Keowun ri near Yeong wol. But the road is finished at Keowun ri and you should ask small ferry to transport you to the island. This is one of the beautiful scenery Dong gang produces. The meaning of Eorayeon is [pond of many fish]. There are still many fish. You can catch some Keokji and many Galkeyoni by several castings of lure or fly fishing. It takes aprox. 4 hours by car from Seoul.

 

KiHwaCheon (Stream)     MiTanMyeon, PyeongChangGun

Kihwa cheon takes its rise from a spring at Mitan myeon which is located between Pyeongchang and Jeongseon. It is a narrow and shallow stream but there are many trouts escaped from the trout fishery near the stream. You can catch some trouts in each pools by several castings of fly fishing. It meets Dong gang within 5 km at Jintan ferry. It takes aprox. 3 hours and half by car from Seoul.

 

DongDaeCheon (Stream)    HwaAmMyeon, JeongSeonGun
 

This stream passes Jeongseon through Hwa am dong gul(Cave). The cliffy mountains along the stream are so beautiful that the road runs along the river is recommended as the good driving course.The species is not varied but there are trouts escaped from the trouts fishery nearthe stream. Besides, anglers can catch many Pirami and Galkyeoni by fly fishing. It takes aprox. 4 hours by car from Seoul.  

 

JoYangGang (River)  JeongSeonEup & SinDongEup

This is the name of the upper stream of Dong gang, which flows through Jeongseon and Kihwa cheon is in the vicinity. This river has many species at the upper stream near Jeongseon and provides many fishing spots good for lure and fly castings. The main species are Keokji. Some spots provide Sogari. Moreover, there are quite a lot of wild trouts escaped from the fisheries long time ago. The surrounding along the river is really impressive. Especially fly fishing in this river is so effective that you can catch many fish in every trips. It takes aprox. 3 and half hours by car from Seoul.

ImKyeCheon (Stream)  ImKyeMyeon, JeongSeonGun

Imkye cheon flows through Imkye myeon located in north east of Jeongseon runs towards west for Yeoryang. On the other hand, the stream runs to east is called as Golji cheon. The surrounding along the stream is of absolute beauty because this province is in the midst of grand massifs Taebaek. And, you can catch many fish in every crooks of the snake streams. Sogari is also one of the main species. It takes aprox. 4 hours by car from Seoul.

 

DongGang (River) 
NamMyeon, JeongSeonGun & YeongWolEup, YeongWolGun.  

Joyang gang passed by Jeongseon changes its name as Dong gang from the junction with Dongnam cheon at Gasu ri, Jeongseon eup. This beautiful snake river avoides our approaches by car until it arrives at Munsan ri. I should call this river a real paradise of lure and fly fishing due to its extremely impressive scenery and the variety of species.It takes aprox. 5 hours by car from Seoul.

 

OkDongCheon (Stream) & JikDong KyeGok (Valley)
 Hadong myeon, Yeong wol  gun

You can meet this stream on the way to Bonghwa that begins from  Kimsatgat's old residence in the west of Yeongwol. In the vicinity of the stream, there are several trouts fisheries that provides trouts to the stream by escapes. Jikdong ravine, a branch of Okdong cheon is much more productive. The scenery of the ravine is beautiful and the hamlets are quiet. This ravine is most suitable foe flyfishing and lure fishing. It takes aprox. 4 hours by car from Seoul.

In Jawun cheon, it is hopeless for fishing chance because the stream has been much ruined by many resort facilities built along it. Fishing condition is still good from pine forest 'Gwangwon ri', the junction of those three streams, towards Gwangwon bridge over Kyebang cheon and towards Nairin cheon. Naerin cheon flows through the valley of absolute beauty providing good places for camping in every crooks. In the summer, there are so many tents that the anglers should cast at dawn. You can meet many Galkyeoni and several Sancheoneo in every trips. It takes aprox.4 hours by car from Seoul.

BukCheon (Stream)      GanSeongEup, GoSeongGun 

It is another Buk cheon that runs through Jinbu ryeong, irrigating finally Donghae (East sea). It is also the stream passing through gorge area. The stream is quite long and the gorge is relatively deep. Seeking for fish in every spots of this stream takes a whole day. The scenery is also beautiful and there are many Sancheoneo to catch. You can fish many Galkyeoni, Pirami and Keokji, too. It takes aprox. 4 and half hours by car from Seoul.

OSaekCheon (Stream)    
SeoMyeon, YangYangGun & BukMyeon, InJeGun.

Osaek cheon is the stream that flows from Osaek Spring located under Hankye ryeong(pass) towards Yangyang, finally gets into Donghae (East sea). It is known as one of the good fishing spot of Sancheoneo and trouts.This stream runs through the gorge but there is not many rough area.The water level is steady even in the draft season.You can expect to encounter some wild trouts. It takes aprox. 4 hours by car from Seoul.

 

NamDaeCheon (Stream) at YangYang 
Yang yang eup & Hyeonbuk myeon, Yang yang gun.

This stream rises from the valley Buyeon dong in Odae san, flows to the north, passing through Yangyang and finally gets into Donghae (East sea). It is one of the stream where the salmons come back. This stream was famous for Euneo (sweet smelt) fishing and its abuncance of fish. Rrecently fishing in most of the part of the stream was banned due to anadromous salmons. Instead, they hold a salmon fishing contest in November. It takes aprox. 4 hours by car from Seoul.

HuCheon ( Stream) alias  GalCheon    
Galcheon ri, Hyeonbuk myeon, Yang yang gun.

This stream is a confluent of Namdae cheon of Yangyang. It meets Osaek cheon and becomes Namdae cheon. There are plenty of wild trouts escaped from the trouts fisheries long time ago.  The stream is long and it makes rapids, riffles, pools, in each crook and around barriers that provide wide fishing spots. The main species are Sancheoneo and trouts as well as Pirami and Galkyeoni. It takes aprox. 5 hours by car from Seoul.

 

YeonGokCheon (Stream)     YeonGokMyeon, GangReungSi (city)

Yeon gok cheon rises from Jin gogae(pass) and flows through Yeok gok , suburb of Jumunjin, finally irrigates Donghae (East sea). The surrounding is really fantastic. It flows through the gorge. There are many Sancheoneo. It is the fishing spot of almost four seasons except freezing period. The entire shore could be considered as fishing spots. It takes aprox. 4 hours by car from Seoul.

 

OSipCheon (Stream)   MiRoMyeon, SamcheokSi (city)

In this stream, you can catch hwang eo anadromous from Donghae (East sea). The stream is very long and big. Species are varied and it has plenty of fish. Fishing for four seasons is available in the non-freezing area between Sangjeong ri, middle stream to the lower stream. You can catch easily trouts and hwang eo by lure and fly fishing. It takes more than a whole day to explore all the spots on such a long stream. About 5 and half hours' drive from Seoul.

 

DaeYri  KyeGok  (Valley)    SinKiMyeon, SamCheokSi (city)

It is one of the the upper streams of Osip cheon. The population of Sancheoneo is dense and you may encounter some wild trouts escaped from the fisheries. The road goes 9 km or so alongside the stream from the entrance of the Daeyri Kyegok (valley) to Hwanseon gul(cave) is paved. Fly casting on deep pool could lure Sancheoneo or wild trouts. It takes aprox. 5 and half hours by car from Seoul.

 

GaGokCheon (Stream)      KiGokMyeon, SamCheokSi (city)

This stream runs through Hosan beach to get into Donghae (East sea). Deokpung Kyegok (ravine) is located in the upper stream. In the past, it was renown as fishing spot of Euneo (sweet smelt). There are many spots of Euneo and all those spots are for fly fishing as well. You may encounter some trouts and many Pirami. The ravine is beautiful and water is cool . It takes Aprox. 5 and half hours by car from Seoul.

 

 MaEupCheon (Stream)    KeunDeokMyeon, SamCheokSi (city)

It was one of the most famous fishing spots for Euneo(Sweet smelt) in Korea, located in vicinity with Osip cheon, Gagok cheon, Gungchon cheon. In the stream, there are not many barriers under water that makes Enuneo be anadromous easily from the sea. You have good pine forests near the stream that are excellent for camping. All the spots for Euneo are good for fly casting as well. Fly rods of 2~3 weight equipped with midge can lure many Pirami and etc.. It takes aprox. 5 and half hours from Seoul.

 

 ChoDangJi (Impoundment) ChoDang Kyegok (Valley)

This impoundment is the first fishing place allowed to public in Korea. In the effluent of the impoundment, Korean freshwater laboratory who studies freshwater fishery nourishing many species is located and quite a lot of trouts and Sancheoneo escaped are living in the Chodang Kyegok (ravine). The ravine is too narrow to cast lures. It takes aprox. 5 and half hours by car from Seoul.

 

DeokPung KyeGok (Valley)    
 PungGokRi, GaGokMyeon, SamCheokSi (city)

This beautiful valley is located at upper stream of Gagok cheon. Sancheoneo is the main species.  Recently, it became Commercial fishing spot that you should pay for fishing. Minimum fee for fishing permit is 30,000 won valid for six months. You can see that many Sancheoneo are swimming slowly at every crooks of streams, in pools, riffles, rapids and so on. Parking and homestay are available. It takes aprox. 5 and half hours by car from Seoul.  Trip by train is also available and recommended.
